Who's on First?

Recently a reporter asked if there were flash cards or a program guide to keep up with the casino owners and their flip-flopping positions on gambling in Ohio. After several such conversations we are reminded of Abbott and Costello’s famous comedy routine, “Who’s on First?” The following program guide is submitted to help sort out the 2009 players on Ohio Ballot Issue #3.

The Amendments

1990 – One casino in Lorain, Ohio.

1996 – Eight casino riverboats in Ohio.

2006 – Seven racetrack casinos and two free standing casinos in Ohio.

2008 – One casino in Wilmington, Ohio.

2009 – Four casinos on specific land in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo.

The Players and the Flip-Flops

1990 – For the Amendment: Alan Spitzer / Opposed: Ohio Racetracks, Ohio Roundtable, Ohio Methodist Church, Ohio Council of Churches

1996 – For the Amendment: Alan Spitzer and handful of wealthy potential owners / Opposed: Citizens for A Strong Ohio, Ohio Roundtable, Ohio Methodist Church, Ohio Council of Churches

2006 – For the Amendment: Nine wealthy casino operators and potential owners, Ohio Racetrack owners / Opposed: Vote No Casinos, Ohio Roundtable, Ohio Methodist Church, Ohio Council of Churches

2008 – For the Amendment: Casino Developer Lyle Berman and potential owners / Opposed: Vote No Casinos, Ohio Roundtable, Ohio Methodist Church, Ohio Council of Churches, Penn National Gaming, Inc.

2009 – For the Amendment: Penn National Gaming, Inc., Dan Gilbert and potential owners / Opposed: Vote No Casinos, Ohio Roundtable, Ohio Methodist Church, Ohio Council of Churches, Mountaineer Casino, Ohio Racetracks

Key Facts
1) Issue 3 is an AMENDMENT to the Ohio Constitution that will create a private monopoly controlled by four casino owners.
